The Sandbox unveils partnership with Atari

The Sandbox – a virtual world built on the Ethereum blockchain – has unveiled a partnership with entertainment giant Atari.

The former is a platform from which users can build, own and monetise their creations.

The latest move means classic properties such as Asteroids, Centipede, Pong and RollerCoaster Tycoon will be recreated in voxel form.

These ‘ASSETs’ can later be utilised by players in their own unique creations and video games.

Atari will receive large digital spaces – known as ‘ESTATEs’ – in The Sandbox’s gaming metaverse.

Within them, the entertainment behemoth’s virtual recreations will be available when the project publicly launches later this year.

Similarly, a virtual theme park universe will also be created featuring a variety of classic Atari titles including attractions and buildings for exploration.

“Atari is rightly celebrated as a pioneer in the world of gaming, and this partnership continues the brand’s innovation by bringing its treasured gaming heritage into the decentralised, blockchain-based metaverse,” said Sebastien Borget, COO and co-founder of The Sandbox.

“Together, we are making history by creating the first virtual Atari theme park on blockchain, and it will be really fun for our players to play, explore and create inside Atari-inspired virtual worlds.”

Meanwhile Atari CEO, Frédéric Chesnais, has said:

“Given that Atari’s iconic brands introduced so many people to their first interactive entertainment, it only makes sense for us to be part of the imaginative experience that is The Sandbox.

“This exciting collaboration with The Sandbox also expands and deepens Atari’s strategic involvement in blockchain-powered and cryptocurrency-fuelled entertainment.”
