Borderlands 3 racks up Gearbox’s best numbers ever, says CEO17th September 2019
Borderlands 3 launched last week and it has hit the ground running with the “best numbers in Gearbox history”, according to CEO Randy Pitchford.
Despite the name, Borderlands 3 is the fourth game to be released in the series. Borderlands 2 was released on September 18 2012 – marking its seventh birthday tomorrow. Borderlands The Pre-Sequel was released in between 2 and 3.
Gearbox has developed the four major titles, though Telltale Games also developed the spin-off ‘Tales from the Borderlands’.
Despite Borderlands 3 having only just been released, it would seem that it is more popular than ever, at least according to Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford.
The CEO revealed on Twitter:
“Fun Fact: On PC, the data is that the launch day peak concurrent players of Borderlands 3 is about *twice-as-high* as the all time peak concurrent players of Borderlands 2.”
Fun Fact: On PC, the data is that the launch day peak concurrent players of Borderlands 3 is about *twice-as-high* as the all time peak concurrent players of Borderlands 2. WOW! You guys are great!

While this data only encompasses the PC version of the title and not the console offerings it is surprising to see that the launch day peak for the new titles exceeds the all time peak for Borderlands 2.
In a follow up tweet, Randy Pitchford exclaimed that the newly-launched title had given Gearbox its best-ever numbers: “Incredible day with new peak concurrency (and climbing). Best numbers in Gearbox history!”
While Pitchford hasn’t given much in relation to how well the title has sold on console, Borderlands 3 certainly set its opening weekend on fire, at least according to the numbers quoted by the Gearbox CEO himself.
