Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is the most-played in series’ modern history
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare has been a riveting success for Activision, with the publisher revealing it has been the most-played in the series’ modern history.
The game released on October 24 2019 and it swiftly became the top-selling premium game of 2019 in the US year-to-date while crossing $1 billion in worldwide sell-through.
The sell-through figures have been calculated from both retail and digital unit sales.
Before launch, it was a significantly hyped game and one that has managed to sustain interest.
It has outpaced all previous Call of Duty multiplayer experiences of this generation in hours played, hours per player and average daily players while being firmly on its way to becoming the most-played CoD multiplayer in its first 50 days since release in six years.
Remarkably, since it hit the shelves players have managed to surpass 500 million multiplayer hours tallied with nearly 300 million matches.
Perhaps one of the contributing factors to its abundant success lies in the fact it is the first in the series’ history to boast cross-play support and cross-progression. It has also had post-release content made free for all players, on all platforms.
“The momentum for Modern Warfare from day one has been incredible,” said Byron Beede, executive vice president and general manager of Call of Duty for Activision.
“Players are having a great time and are continuing to engage across the multiplayer experience at the highest level in years. We’re also seeing new franchise highs for this console generation in hours played, hours per player and average daily players.
“It’s great to see the fan response to the hard work from our development teams led by Infinity Ward. Players are having a great time, and there’s much more to come as we continue to deliver new content.”
