Call of Duty: Warzone will be available on next-gen consoles4th May 2020
Infinity Ward has confirmed Activision’s Call of Duty: Warzone will be available on the PS5 and Xbox Series X.
The free-to-play battle royale game currently accompanies the studio’s latest title Modern Warfare (2019).
However, players do not need to own the full game to play it. As such, it is widely accessible to anyone and this will continue on to the next-generation consoles.
A new entry to the Call of Duty franchise releases every year, but Warzone will remain a standalone feature.
This will be good news to many, as some had doubted its life cycle in light of the yearly entries to the series.
Infinity Ward – the developer behind the Modern Warfare portion of the franchise – confirmed the news itself.
Narrative director Taylor Kurosaki recently spoke with GamerGen and revealed:
“I know that our plan is Warzone is going to be around for quite some time, so as soon as those new systems are out and available I’m sure we’ll support them.”
Interestingly, he continued to shed light on how the free-to-play battle royale title will be a “through line that connects all of the various different sub-franchises of Call of Duty”.
“It’s going to be really cool to see how the different sub-franchises sort of come in and out of focus, but Warzone will be the one constant.“
While Kurosaki’s comments do not reveal how it will connect to each branch of the franchise’s tree, it is certainly intriguing.
It is not yet clear how the series will move forward, but perhaps it follow the likes of Fortnite and Apex Legends and release a new map in tandem with the next Call of Duty.
At the moment, Warzone is an amalgamation of multiple maps in Modern Warfare. As such, the next iteration could combine elements of the forthcoming Call of Duty title.
