Cyberpunk 2077 will have 1,000 NPCs with ‘handmade’ routines9th June 2020
CD Projekt Red’s upcoming Cyberpunk 2077 will feature at least 1,000 non-playable characters (NPCs) that have ‘handmade’ routines.
The Polish developer is often celebrated for its attention to detail, and the same appears to be true for its forthcoming project.
The last title released from the studio – The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – is commonly heralded as the benchmark for fantasy role-playing games (RPG).
While Cyberpunk 2077 is far from a fantasy game, many are expecting CD Projekt Red to once again break boundaries and the latest news appears to corroborate this.
Developers from the studio – Miles Tost and Philipp Weber – recently appeared on a podcast that was later detailed on Reddit.
During the interview, they discussed how in The Witcher 3, there were but a few characters that had daily routines.
But, in Cyberpunk there are going to be more than 1,000 NPCs that each have handcrafted routines which differ each day.
It is becoming more and more common for game developers to program NPCs to have autonomous routines, such as those found in Rockstar’s masterpiece Red Dead Redemption 2.
However, it is rare for a game to have so many non-playable characters that have individual days programmed into their virtual lives.
Reportedly, the attention to detail doesn’t end with the NPCs.
Tost and Webber also discussed how there are three times as many ways to complete a mission than in The Witcher 3.
The studio supposedly considered some of the more absurd choices a player might make on their adventure to ensure all quests can still be completed.
The example provided highlighted how if the protagonist was speaking to an NPC but they were fatally shot, they could continue beyond the traditional boundaries of the quest and still finish it.
The only variable that could spell the end of the mission is the player’s death, which tends to suggest there are going to be countless ways to play the game.
Cyberpunk 2077 will release on September 17, 2020 for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC and Google Stadia.
