Team Vitality hires former pro tennis and poker players
Global eSports organisation Team Vitality has added former professional tennis and poker players to its team of performance experts.
It is one of only 10 teams in the League of Legends European Championship and has gathered more than 20 million followers across its social media channels.
Its notable sponsors include Adidas, Renault, Orange and Red Bull. Throughout its time as a competitive organisation, it has taken part in more than 1,000 competitions while its players have stood on the top of 250 podiums across the globe.
The team has founded a new performance department with tennis legend Thierry Ascione as its leader.
He has a wealth of experience in the competitive scene having turned pro back in 2000 for 10 years before becoming a coach for several big names including former world number three Elina Svitolina and French ace Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.
He has began by focusing on Team Vitality’s Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO) branch.
“I am very excited by this challenge, but I’m also proud and impatient to prove that the victory secured at EPICENTER was only the beginning,” he said.
“People are at the center of everything, that’s why we will take care of each player individually, but also of all of them as a team. Even during our first meeting with the team I could see that we shared the same ambitions and visions, and that’s what made us accept this project.”
Ascione is joined by Pier Gauthier, another former tennis player and coach, alongside Ludovic Lacay, an ex-professional poker player who has competed in major tournaments.
The performance department will be tasked with developing methods, preparation tactics, and training the CS:GO team before rolling out to each of Team Vitality’s nine rosters.
