Big Bang Theory star signs up for eSports comedy show
NBC is tipped to create a comedy TV show centred on the booming eSports industry called ‘The Squad’.
Johnny Galecki – best-known for his role playing Leonard in The Big Bang Theory – will reportedly star in the upcoming show.
The actor, who rose to fame with the hugely popular sitcom will be reunited with Big Bang Theory writer Anthony Del Broccolo.
The Squad will focus on a group of friends sharing a mutual love for eSports.
NBC has handed out a script order for the multicamera show which has been penned by the acclaimed writer.
Del Broccolo will devise the script and produce alongside Galecki and Warners Bros TV-based Alcide Bava Productions. Holly Brown – who works for the company – will also be an executive producer while Cory Wood is also set to be a producer.
The Big Bang Theory actor’s latest venture is the product of his deal with WBTV. Last year he developed and produced the CBS comedy show ‘Living Biblically’ while also recently reprising his role as David on ABC’s ‘The Connors’.
Galecki has placed a lot of emphasis on the production side of the TV industry after The Big Bang Theory made its bow in May. It ended as the longest-running multicamera comedy in television history.
Other details surrounding The Squad – such as additional cast members – still remain sparse at this stage.
It is unsurprising to see major TV production companies begin to ride the wave of eSports when the industry is forecast to surpass $1 billion in revenue for the first time this year, according to Newzoo.
