Woman shot dead playing Pokemon Go
Police in New Mexico have confirmed a 21-year-old who was shot dead after being caught in the crossfire of an armed robbery had stumbled onto the scene while playing Pokemon Go with her boyfriend.
Gamer Cayla Campos and her partner – identified by detectives only as ‘Sidney’ – had been pursuing Pokemon characters in Albuquerque before returning to their favourite hunting ground of Bianchetti Park to finish their game when they accidentally became entangled in the crime scene.
The couple witnessed two men with guns targeting a victim in a nearby vehicle as they drove to the local beauty spot.
In a panic Miss Campos immediately turned her car around to flee the scene.
However, Albuquerque Police Department (APD) say the gunmen also opened fire at her retreating car, striking the gaming enthusiast. Tragically, Miss Campos died at the scene before ambulance crews arrived.
Detectives have appealed for help in tracking down the killers.
“The two vehicles involved were a red car – possibly a Ford Mustang – and a silver four door sedan,” officers said.
“APD is asking the victims of the ‘robbery’ or anyone else with information to please come forward. They can contact 242-COPS with information.”
Friends of the young woman told local station KRQE about how Miss Campos was a dedicated gaming enthusiast who had high hopes of one becoming a dentist.
Her best friend – Cody Bell – described how her death had left a void in the community.
“She was just such an amazing person,” he said.
“I am really trying hard not to break down right now – I feel like there is a piece of me that is missing now.
“Just knowing that I am never going to see her again or talk to her… I am just sorry that her life was taken away so soon.”
A clearly devastated Mr Bell also explained how Miss Campos would stop at the park every evening – without fail – before going home to their apartment just yards away.
