Half-Life games free on Steam until Alyx release
With Half-Life: Alyx mere months away, Valve’s beloved earlier entries to the franchise are currently available for free on Steam.
While the upcoming game is far from a direct sequel to the first and second titles, it set the world on fire when it was announced.
It also marks the first time the mainstream gaming audience has truly been excited about a virtual reality (VR) game.
It is no surprise the community is longing for a new edition, particularly when the latest one to be released under the series’ name dates back all the way to 2005.
Half-Life: Alyx will see the player take control of Alyx Vance alongside her father, Eli, as the pair fight back against the ‘Combine’ in City 17.
Its release date is set for March but to whet the appetite of fans, all previous games under the franchise’s name are currently free on the Steam platform. These include Half-Life one, two, episode one and episode two.
The games have to be downloaded through the digital distribution platform and will only be available for nothing until the release of the new title. Afterwards, they will all return to their original price.
The reasoning behind the series being freely offered is not only to ramp up hype and interest but also because Alyx is set before the events of Half-Life 2 and the subsequent episodes.
“The Half-Life: Alyx team believes the best way to enjoy the new game is to play through the old ones, especially Half-Life 2 an the episodes, so we want to make that as easy as possible,” said Valve.
