Apex Legends was PS4’s most downloaded F2P game in 2019
Respawn’s battle royale Apex Legends was the most downloaded free-to-play (F2P) game in 2019, ousting its number one rival Fortnite.
The game was met with much acclaim when it debuted last February and it certainly took the PlayStation world by storm even with Epic Games’ iron grip on the battle royale market.
Despite its apparent success, it was unable to generate the revenue Fortnite did, yet still managed to take the cake for being the number one downloaded free game on PlayStation 4.
It is currently enjoying its third season which introduced a brand new map alongside ‘Crypto’ – the newest addition to the Legends.
Epic Games’ spin on the genre launched back in July 2017 meaning most players interested likely already have it installed, though it still managed to clinch the second spot behind Respawn’s iteration.
Although, finishing second is unlikely to trouble the developer since the top 10 most-downloaded content and expansions were all taken by Fornite – highlighting how interest has far from waned.
While Apex still doesn’t post a major threat to its rival, PlayStation’s end-of-year download figures could possibly indicate a strong year ahead.
Elsewhere in the statistics, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare was the number one downloaded video game which required purchase.
Following behind it was, remarkably, Grand Theft Auto V which first debuted all the way back in 2013 on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 but was quickly released for the current generation.
In third was none other than the console edition of Minecraft, another title which has been out for numerous years but recently enjoyed a second spell of popularity after internet sensation Pewdiepie began playing it and even racked up the most views on YouTube for the 2019 video games category.
